Many parents aren't sure whether what they're seeing is a normal learning curve or something more. Common signs include:

• Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words, even after repeated practice

• Reading well below grade level despite strong effort

• Avoiding reading aloud or reading altogether

• Trouble with spelling that doesn't improve with typical instruction
